Weather

Jasper town site is nestled in the Rocky Mountains at an elevation of 1100 meters (about 3300 feet) and latitude of 53 degrees north which is also home to Jasper National Park in the Canadian Rockies.

The summers here are cool, with average maximum temperatures in July hovering around 24°C (75°F) during the day and dropping to a chilly 7°C (45°F) at night. Because of its northern latitude, there are long daylight hours in the summer, and short daylight hours in the winter.

The average daily temperature is below freezing from November to March, and during these five months, nearly four feet (120 cm) of snow falls on the town. It is not even unusual for snow to fall as late as May or as early as September although, in general, the town itself does not begin to accumulate snow until late November or early December.

Despite the chilly climate, nearly two million visitors still flock to Jasper National Park in the Canadian Rockies every year, a testament to the park's great beauty and unparalleled Rocky Mountain view. In the summer, most of the visitors are there for activities like hiking and rafting, but the winter offers its attractions as well, with skiing and snowboarding.

Wildlife

Jasper wildlife is one of our treasured assets and it is home to a wide variety of creatures. Within Jasper National Park live grizzly and black bears, elk, moose, mountain caribou, and wolves. Smaller creatures also reside in Jasper such hoary marmots, and Columbian ground squirrels, as well as a vast number of rare and majestic birds such as bald eagles to the endangered harlequin ducks.

Although there are always animals to be seen, avid wildlife watchers are best to visit Jasper from March to June or in the fall from September to November.
